What did I do? Well, I failed to do the things I know should do. Two very simple things, really. 1) Check your camera battery before you leave the house. 2) Carry a spare battery. That is all. Nothing magical. I assumed I had a full battery in the camera when I left Saturday morning. I guess I forgot I had used it to shoot with during lunch on Friday. I also had not replaced the spare battery in my pack that I keep my camera in.
Needless to say, my day of shooting ended early on Saturday. Things happen. I was at Eagle Creek Park; bouncing between a couple of seed piles there. I dumped the remaining seed I had in my car and sat back and hoped. My targets were Fox Sparrow, Eastern Towhee, Dark-eyed Junco, and American Tree Sparrow. I saw a couple of the latter, but I missed shots at them.
Sunday was going to be a short day, regardless. I at least got my battery charged and put the spare (charged, too) back in my pack. I headed over to Indy Regional to look for longspurs and buntings. It was a gray, overcast morning, and I really tend to struggle with these species in this type of lighting. For some reason, they seem much more prone to having flat black eyes with no highlights or catchlights in them when the skies are overcast like this. I am not sure if it is something I am doing wrong or if it is an issue with the species. I was happy to have a pair of Snow Buntings fly in briefly. After 45 minutes here, I decided to head back home. I knew I was not really getting the shots I wanted. It is always nice to see these birds, though.
And with that, it is time to start thinking about work, tomorrow. I could use an extra day off.
